To produce food-grade phosphoric acid, phosphate ore is first reduced with coke in an electric arc furnace, to give elemental phosphorus. Silica is also added, resulting in the production of calcium silicate slag. Elemental phosphorus is distilled out of the furnace and burned with air to produce high-purity phosphorus pentoxide, which is dissolved in water to make phosphoric acid.[22]

Most acids in beer are organic acids and include, most commonly, acetic (vinegar flavor), pyruvic, lactic (sour milk-like flavor), malic, and citric acid (strong tartness). They derive from raw materials, wort boiling and, mainly, yeast metabolism. Lactic and acetic acids can also derive from unwanted or uncontrolled microbial contamination. Stronger mineral acids, such as sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid, are used for passivating stainless steel and for cleaning brewing vessels and tanks. Phosphoric acid may also be used in acid-washing to reduce or eliminate bacterial infections in brewing yeast. Peracetic acid is an effective no-rinse sanitizer for brewery applications. Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is sometimes used in beer as an antioxidant.

This highly concentrated phosphoric acid can be used as a non-foaming, non-rinse sanitiser when diluted with water to a concentration of 1ml per Litre of water. Phosphoric acid is also excellent for passifying stainless to prevent it from rusting. In brewing, phosphoric acid is also great for adjusting PH of sparge water and can be completely metabolized by yeast if it ends up on your fermenter.

Phosphoric Acid, 50% is a clear colorless liquid with no foreign odor with a minimum phosphoric acid equivalent of 49-51%. Phosphoric acid is relatively non-volatile and stable at elevated temperatures; it is a much milder acid than sulfuric, nitric, or hydrochloric acids. This product is generally recognized as safe as a miscellaneous and/or general purpose food additive under 21 CFR 182.1073 (Phosphoric Acid).
